Saint-Martin-de-Corléans
Megalithic area
Description
The area, among the most interesting prehistoric archaeological sites in the world and unique in Italy, extends for about one hectare outside the historic center of Aosta.
The name ‘megalithic area’ was coined specifically to describe this place, and only one other site in the world can boast being named like the one in Aosta. The name itself expresses the function that the area has always had: to be a place of worship and burial, rather than just an alignment of menhirs or stones.
It is a multi-layered site, and the artifacts that compose it range from traces related to Neolithic consecration rituals to shrines from the Copper and Bronze Ages, as well as Roman and Gallic remains on which a Romanesque church was eventually built. This historical stratification makes the site of global relevance and interest due to the alignments of 24 totemic wooden poles and 46 anthropomorphic steles, considered masterpieces of global significance.
The uniqueness of the visit lies in accessing the various layers in reverse order, passing through six sections from the Middle Ages to the 5th millennium BC, also including the 2nd and 3rd centuries.
